Speed, Distance and Time Calculator: Formulas and Examples

Use the speed-distance-time relationship to solve travel and motion calculations with consistent units.

A Speed, Distance and Time Calculator solves one of three values when the other two are known.

The Three Core Formulas

For example, travelling 150 kilometres in 3 hours gives an average speed of 50 km/h.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Choose the quantity you want to calculate.
  2. Enter the other two known values.
  3. Check that units are compatible.
  4. Calculate and review the result.

Keep Units Consistent

If distance is in kilometres and time is in hours, speed is in kilometres per hour (km/h). If distance is in metres and time is in seconds, speed is in metres per second (m/s). To convert m/s to km/h, multiply by 3.6; to convert km/h to m/s, divide by 3.6.

Average Speed

For a complete journey, average speed is total distance divided by total elapsed time. It is not always the simple average of two speeds, especially when the time spent at each speed differs.

Limitations

This basic relationship assumes the values describe the same journey or interval. It does not account automatically for traffic, stops, changing speed, or route conditions.

Use it for classroom problems and rough travel planning. Actual arrival time depends on real conditions.
