ROI Calculator for Business: Return on Investment Formula and Examples

Calculate a simple return on investment, understand the formula, and compare business spending with the benefit received.

Return on Investment (ROI) is a simple way to compare the gain or loss from an investment with its cost. Businesses use it to review campaigns, equipment, projects, and other spending.

ROI Formula

ROI (%) = (Net Return ├╖ Investment Cost) ├Ч 100

Net return is usually the benefit received minus the investment cost. Confirm how your organization defines return before comparing projects.

Example

If a campaign costs тВ╣20,000 and produces тВ╣28,000 in attributable revenue, the revenue difference is тВ╣8,000. That difference is not necessarily profit: the business may also have product, labour, delivery, and other costs. For a meaningful ROI, use net benefit after the relevant costs.

If the net benefit after costs is тВ╣5,000 on a тВ╣20,000 investment, ROI is 25%.

How to Use an ROI Calculator

  1. Enter the investment cost.
  2. Enter the return or benefit using a consistent definition.
  3. Subtract relevant costs to calculate net benefit.
  4. Calculate ROI and compare it with the time period and risk involved.

ROI vs Revenue

High revenue does not automatically mean high ROI. A project can generate large sales but still have low or negative returns if its costs are high. Include all material expenses and avoid counting the same benefit twice.

Compare Projects Fairly

Use the same measurement period, cost categories, and attribution method. ROI alone does not show how long money is tied up, how uncertain the outcome is, or when cash arrives.

ROI is a useful summary metric, not a complete business decision rule. Review cash flow, risk, strategic value, and assumptions alongside it.
